Safety Measures for Riding a Bicycle - by Faramarz B.

Riding a bicycle is an enjoyable activity for the whole family at any time. Of course, there are some safety points to consider in some special circumstances. For instance, it could be dangerous i f you don’t follow the safety measures while riding on wet, slushy, or muddy surfaces, such as in winter or even at night. You should take special precautions especially while riding long distances.

During rainy weather, you need to use water- resistant clothes including pants, sweater, gloves and shoes and helmet cover. It’s important not to turn sharply at any intersection because the ground is wet or muddy and you would slip easier than usual. You need to equip your bicycle with fenders in front and rear to prevent splashing water to you. Don’t forget, always ride with at least one meter gap with parked autos, just in case of opening the door and hitting you.

When it’s dark, you need to use front and rear lights and special clothes or tapes which are reflective until other drivers and pedestrians can see you at night. If you want to go for long distances, it’s advised to take a small pump, some emergency tools and extra batteries for the lights, of course, just in case, maybe you would have flat tire or loosen screws on the way.

The toughest part is riding in winter with temperature around zero or even minus. During riding in cold weather is necessary to cover all your body including multi layer gloves, woolen hat and socks, two pants and some layer to cover your upper body. Of course, using layer depends on human’s body physiology, some people need more layers and the others need less. If the ground is icy or snowy, it’s better to use snow tires or ride more slowly and cautiously. If you have runny nose during cold weather, the best way is stuffing a piece of cotton pad in every of your nostrils.

In conclusion, although riding bicycle is enjoyable, healthy and economic, there isn’t any protective layer between you and other vehicles, so you are more vulnerable than them so you need to be more cautious.
